Texas has an incredible 89 state parks, so it can be tough to narrow down your exploration destination. We recommend choosing one of the four impressive Lone Star parks on this list of our favorites, all within easy driving distance of Pittsburg, TX.

Lake Bob Sandlin State Park

We’ll start with our very own state park here in Pittsburg. Lake Bob Sandlin offers 9,000 acres of boating, paddling, and swimming fun, not to mention the incredible fishing for crappie, catfish, and bass. The park has kayak rentals, stocked trout ponds, a lighted fishing pier, and a boat ramp. You can also traverse the mountain bike trails, look for geocaches, have a picnic, or camp for the weekend.

Lake Bob Sandlin State Park is located at 341 State Park Rd 2117. It’s open every day from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. The entrance fee is $5 for ages 13 and older and free for children.

Daingerfield State Park

Head about 20 minutes from Pittsburg to Daingerfield to check out this state park. You can enjoy several miles of hiking trails or go fishing on the 80-acre Little Pine Lake. Daingerfield State Park rents flat-bottom boats, kayaks, canoes, paddle boards, and paddle boats. Camp for the weekend in one of several historic cabins or reserve a tent site. Don’t forget to check the calendar for cool ranger programs and community celebrations.

Daingerfield State Park is located at 455 Park Rd 17. The entry fee is $4 (free for children 12 and younger). You can visit daily from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m.

Atlanta State Park

This state park is about an hour’s drive northeast of Pittsburg. When you arrive, you’ll find a forest of towering pines on the shores of Wright Patman Lake, where you can swim, water-ski, and angle for catfish. Atlanta State Park features almost 5 miles of hiking trails, equipment rentals including kayaks and horseshoes, campsites, and a park store that sells snacks and essentials.

Atlanta State Park is located at 927 Park Rd 42. It costs $3 for a day pass (ages 13 and up only), with hours from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m.

Purtis Creek State Park

Head southeast for about an hour and 45 minutes from Pittsburg to reach this Eustace park. Purtis Creek State Park is best known as a bass fishing destination, but you can also hike miles of trails or simply rent a canoe and enjoy peaceful solitude as you paddle.

The park is located at 14225 FM 316 N. Purtis Creek State Park has a $5 entry fee for adults.
